Early Childhood

Entrance Requirements

Although a need for gifted education is not a requirement for the early childhood program, it is imperative that parents understand the magnitude of the program. Classes are planned and curriculum is developed to ready students for gifted kindergarten placement. There is a one-week acclimation period for all children entering the 3 year old or 4 year old program. Students not at a maturity level for this intensive learning program through play are asked to seek educational services elsewhere. All students in the early childhood program must apply through the established admission process for kindergarten.

Application Process

  1. Meet with the Administrator for Admissions and Public Relations
  2. Application form
  3. $100.00 non-refundable application fee
  4. One week in class maturity/behavior profile period

Elementary & Middle School

Entrance Requirements

Students must be at least 5 years of age and demonstrate aptitude for the school’s high academic and creative standards through a personal interview and testing. Specifically, the following five factors are reviewed for entrance:

  1. Psychological evaluation: An in-depth evaluation is required by a licensed psychologist. The WISC (WIPSY for children 6 years or younger) or The Stanford Binet Test scores are the only accepted evaluations. Many students may already have these scores from the public schools or from a private psychologist; however,IQ scores are not the only deciding factor.
  2. Academic performance: This includes evidence of consistent above-average performance in the student’s previous school.
  3. Personal interview: We seek evidence of a student’s motivation to learn. Following this interview, we may request additional documentation regarding the student’s abilities
  4. Conduct: Applicants are expected to show respect for others and demonstrate the kind of behavior that is conducive to learning.
  5. Talent: Students may show intense ability in one of several areas such as; the visual arts, music, writing or mathematics.

A weakness in one of these requirements can be offset by strengths in another. We recognize for example, that many gifted children, if not provided the correct environment, can become underachievers, resulting in below-average school grades.

Application Process

  1. Meet with the Administrator for Admissions and Public Relations
  2. Application form
  3. $100.00 non-refundable application fee
  4. Psychological evaluation
  5. Samples of child’s work (math, art, writing, etc.)
  6. Copies of previous school report cards, letters from teachers, etc.
These items are reviewed by the Board of Admissions. If it is determined that the applicant is a good candidate for The Weiss School, a date is set for the student to visit the school. The applicant’s performance is then reviewed and the admission process is completed.
